As a Sunset Beach family photographer, one of my favorite things is getting to meet big extended families who come together for a beach vacation. Recently, I drove up to meet a sweet extended family at the beach house they rented on Sunset Beach, North Carolina. The ocean breeze, the beautiful dunes, and all the love between them set the tone for a beautiful evening session.
We started with some classic posed family portraits—everyone looking their best with the dunes as our stunning backdrop. These are always important to capture first while everyone is still fresh and dry. Once we had those must-have shots done, the real fun began!
I put my camera down for a second to just play and chat with the kids. It didn’t take long for them to warm up, and that’s when the magic happened. They ran barefoot through the sand, chased each other at the shoreline, and collected seashells while I quietly captured all those natural, candid moments. These are always my favorite—when the laughter is real, the hair is windblown, and the joy is completely unposed.
